How to change the product position in the category product listing.
Sounds simple but most of people don't know how to do it.
Magento allows you to order your products by name or by price when you're surfing a category.
It also allows you to change the position when you're sorting by default.
- Go to: Catalog -> Manage Categories.
- Select a Category.
- Select the Category Products tab.

lifesaver! also worth pointing out that after updating the position, click the “General Information” tab so you can hit the “Save Category” button
I was struggling until I chance upon this post. Thanks a million~!

It’s a shame you don’t have a donate button! I’d definitely donate to this excellent blog! I suppose for now i’ll settle for book-marking and adding your RSS feed to my Google account.
I look forward to fresh updates and will share this site with my Facebook group.

I set all my products in one of my categories, numbering in position column how I wanted them to display on my front end, but it is not working for some reason. I am using magento version 1.702. What am I doing wrong?
Hey there,
Have you tried using the default them?
Are you using a custom theme?
Cheers,
Rick
GREAT!!!! Finaly!! It is so simple 🙂
Thanks for posting this
my product postion not work, i don’t know why.
I am not using default theme. Maybe it only works on default. I have 2 magento carts and don’t work on both
Perhaps your theme does something overwriting the Magento order.
Good work, now i know how to use it already.thanks
Hello
thank you for sharing the solution. Right sorting options helped me to increase my web shop profit. that’s why i recommend everybody use good sorting for their web stores.
And what concerns me, i use http://amasty.com/improved-sorting.html magento extension to set up different sorting options, i need.
This was just what I was looking for. Awesome.
Glad you found it! 🙂
Yes, We can change the products order from the the manage categories section. Also i came across an extension from magento which will make the sort by position in easy and efficient way.
Just you need to drag and drop the products you want to display in its respective position , Instead filling out the numbers in the text box.
